There are several jobs important to Westerners, but to capture the moment, and the happiness of the fans and players, the photographer is always there. The photographer being Josie Cancro, a St. Lawrence University basketball player.
Cancro started getting into photography during the 2019 pandemic. It started with her and her friend at a track meet, said Cancro.
“I was just really bored at home. My brother had an old camera and I took it. One of my friends ran track and she always loved photos of herself, So she and I went to the track one day, and we just took photos! From there on, I just kept doing it. Then I started doing it in high school and I loved it,” said Cancro.
Everybody has a life outside of their passions.
“I would say basketball. I’m on the team at St. Lawrence. I’ve done that my whole life before photography, so kind of those two things, really any sports, watching sports, anything like that,” said Cancro.
Looking towards Cancro’s future, her passion for sports and her degree in digital media could lead to future career oppurtunities such as working for Major League baseball or Minor League baseball.
“I think it would be so cool to work for a team in any sort of major league or minor league. I mean, this is an awesome experience, like, one of the reasons I wanted to do it, just to get that experience of working with a team and other people that are involved and invested in a program,” said Cancro.
Cancro is a new intern, but what part of the Westerner’s environment makes it an enjoyable environment to work in? What part of the Westerner’s makes Cancro want to come back and do what she does every day?
“Not only the other interns, but the coaches, and the players being great, willing to do whatever ideas I have and let me take photos of them all the time, and be in their face,” said Cancro.
All of the photos seen on all of the social media platforms, are thanks to the Westerner’s very own Josie Cancro. Cancro is always at every game capturing every moment from the between-inning sideline games, to the players hitting home runs.
