As the season ends, you see a highlight of a homerun, a good catch made, or a strikeout that is put together by the team's videographer. Who is behind the videography at the Danbury Westerners?
Sean Kaufmann, a sophomore at Ithaca College, handles a lot of work at the Westerners, from creating highlight reels, to interviewing host families. But where did Kaufmann get started in videography?
“I got into videography by having an interest and appreciation for movies and TV shows. I had always liked storytelling to some extent, whether that be writing, creating artwork, or producing musical compositions; getting a chance to work in a medium like film and video was something I knew I wanted to try out,” Kaufmann said.
As Westerners’ interns go back to school Kaufmann will head back to Ithaca College where he studies Television, Photography and Digital Media. What has Kaufmann done while at Ithaca?
“During my time there, I have had the opportunity to create scripts, draw storyboards, handle high-quality film cameras and audio equipment, as well as collaborating with my peers to create student-led films screened both in-class and at the college. It’s been very informative, hands-on and fun, to say the least,” Kaufmann said.
A night at the Westerners looks different for each intern, some are on and off the field, and some are in the press box. So, what does a typical night at a Westerners game look like, for Sean Kaufmann?
“At a typical Westerners home game, I first start by recording the ‘first pitch’ of the game, often followed by the player introductions and the national anthem. From there, I set up my camera to record highlights, capturing the Westerners when they’re up to bat, or on the field. Usually, every 2 innings, I change my camera position, whether that be on the third or first base line, up in the stands by the skybox, behind home plate, to make the footage visually appealing to viewers, ” Kaufmann said.
Next time you see a highlight reel on the social media, think of Sean Kaufmann, that put in time and effort to collect footage for the Danbury Westerners.
